Understanding the Traditional Tamil Solar Calendar System (தமிழ் நாட்காட்டி)
The Tamil calendar is a traditional sidereal solar calendar used by Tamil people in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and across the worldwide Tamil diaspora. Unlike lunisolar calendars, the Tamil solar year begins when the Sun enters the constellation Aries (Mesha Rasi), which marks Chithirai 1 (தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு) around April 14th of the Gregorian calendar.
🗓️ The 60-Year Jovian Cycle (60 தமிழ் ஆண்டுகள்)
The Tamil calendar follows a 60-year repeating cycle named after Jupiter's orbital revolution (Samvatsara). The 60 years start with Prabhava (பிரபவ) and end with Akshaya (அட்சய). Year 2026 corresponds to Visvavasu (விஸ்வாவசு) / Parabhava (பராபவ).
📜 Thiruvalluvar Era (திருவள்ளுவர் ஆண்டு)
The official cultural calendar epoch recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu is the Thiruvalluvar Year, calculated by adding 31 years to the Gregorian year (e.g. 2026 + 31 = 2057 Thiruvalluvar Year).

Panchangam Timings: Scientific Explanation
Nalla Neram (நல்ல நேரம்): Specific planetary hours during the daytime and evening considered universally auspicious for starting new ventures, housewarming, or signing agreements.
Rahu Kalam (ராகு காலம்): A 90-minute daily period ruled by Rahu. In Tamil culture, starting major new long-term commitments during Rahu Kalam is traditionally avoided.
Yamagandam (எமகண்டம்): A 90-minute daily segment governed by Yama. It is suitable for routine activities but avoided for festive beginnings.
Kuligai (குளிகை): Governed by Saturn's son (Gulika). Activities started during Kuligai are believed to repeat multiple times (hence excellent for buying property, saving gold, or learning).
